Country & City: Sweden, Karlskrona.Date of visit: 2000/07/21Summary: The Marinmuseum Karlskrona with collections dating beyond 1752 when the first museum was founded is located both on land, on the water, and under the surface. As being quite some time since the visit which was a hasty one unfortunately, we will be back with a more comprehensive update in the near future. The Large exhibits contain the Swedish navy's first submarine "Hajen" (Shark) from 1904, a fast attack craft, a world war II mine-sweeper and a motor torpedo boat among others. One of the later attractions is an underwater tunnel on the seabed below the museum from which you can have a close look at an old wreck for example. Most interesting is the fact that the museum has acquired former Swedish Navy sub HMS Neptun, in service 1978-1990. The sub is to be put on display in a completely new submarine hall, probably together with "Hajen". Latest report says opening is scheduled to summer 2012.Rating: The museums indoor exhibition is not very large but together with the large ships moored right outside and the tunnel underneath it makes for almost a full days visit.Link: www.marinmuseum.se |
