Kehlsteinhaus Hitlers Eagles Nest Berchtesgaden Germany 2006

Country & City: Germany, Berchtesgaden.
Date of visit: 2006/08/15
Summary: Kehlsteinhaus on Obersalzberg mountain is interesting both in a historical sense and as well for it's surroundings. Located near the town of Berchtesgaden about 1,5 hours drive from Munich or 45 minutes from Salzburg, Austria. Not to be confused with Hitlers Berghof with the famous panorama window seen in many photos & news-reels. Berghof was located at the foot of the mountain and was destroyed by the end of the war. Kehlsteinhaus lies at 1834 mtrs on top of the mountain with a panoramic view of the alps, Berchtesgaden, Königsee lake and Austria. Truly worth the hairy bus ride up the serpentine road!
When in Obersalzberg make sure to start your tour with a visit to Hotel zum Türken from which you access the bunker system 40 mtrs below. The remains of Hitlers Berghof is right next to the Hotel in the woods if interested. Then continue up the same road to the information center and bus stop from where you are taken up the mountain.
Rating: Perfect for a weekend stay. Lots of things to do and see in the immediate surroundings as well as just relaxing in a perfect setting.
